This has not always been an easy task and the solution is often to refer to someone who has been there' and who can comment on the pitfalls and problems. Fortunately, many librarians have described their efforts, successes and failures of 'micro-automation' and they constitute a large proportion of the references included in this bibliography. Some 500 annotated references have been drawn primarily from journals, conference papers and monographs of the library and information world. The greater part of the bibliography is arranged by application and then alphabetically by author within each section. It is intended that librarians and information professionals will benefit from this timely bringing together of previously scattered references. Paul Burton is a lecturer in the Department of Information Science at Strathclyde Business School, University of Strathclyde.
