Summary: | This is the third volume in a continuing series of reviews of international comparative librarianship. It contains contributions from the varying economies that comprise the countries of the Arab World. Its spectrum ranges from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, whose national incomes support advanced technological systems, to the Sudan whose low rate of economic production has brought about a situation where trained personnel tend to expatriate themselves in search of an acceptable standard of living and of resourcing their professional activities. Eighteen chapters from Algeria, Bahrein, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and the USA deal with the current developmental status of library and information services in the region. Specialist topics include public libraries; library provision; children's school libraries; national libraries; medical libararies. There are overview articles on the Maghreb; the impact of the Gulf War; consultancy in the Arab World; and on the library scene in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, and Tunisia. This collection brings together writings from and about the majority of member countries of the Arab League. It provides an insight into matters of concern to librarians and information providers in this huge and populous region, which extends from the North West coast of Africa to the east side of the Gulf, from Turkey's southern frontier to central Africa. |
