 This book integrates government and academic perspectives on the ACTFL/ETS/ILR proficiency guidelines and interview procedures. It begins with an historical overview contrasting the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages guidelines with the Interagency Language Roundtable guidelines, in use several years. The book also includes a discussion of long term research agenda for validation of these guidelines, a focus on special problems of adapting guidelines to less commonly taught languages, an assessment of reading proficiency using guidelines, and an evaluation of writing proficiency and translation skills based on the guidelines.
