The manuscript and notes, particularly, appeared far too badly charred to be readable but were left lying with the other, less damaged papers, in the hope that a few fragments might perhaps be legible and provide sufficient clues to rewrite the book. Some years later, going through the contents of the box, I found to my surprise that actually only the notes and the outer layers of manuscript-a chapter previously published in The Junior Bookshelf-were completely un- readable. Deeper layers, though very badly burnt, proved with difficulty, and much patience, to be decipherable. This deciphering began, and in 1950 some chapters were completed and published in Collins Magazine, and then, for various reasons, the work had to be put aside. Now, at long last, it has been completed. Here are the Ruggles again and I hope those who have met them before, and those who meet them now for the first time, may enjoy this further recording of their small day to day fortunes-and misfortunes.
