Our understanding when we see a movie depends on the information received by our eyes, which is then sent to the brain and then processed. The first part of the book deals with simple processes related to behavior. The second part tells how this simple process is managed into a larger behavioral unit. We begin by explaining the elements of the nervous system, how it receives and transmits information, and how that information is processed in the brain. Cells are the basic unit of all living organisms. There are some common features in almost all cells. Basically we are interested in how organisms interact with their surroundings (behavior). Therefore our focus is on the cells that specifically carry out this function - namely the cells in the nervous system. Nerve cell membranes have two important properties that make them uniquely 'excitable' and in turn can carry that 'excitation' to other cells.
