Walking for Fitness has been developed to assist walkers of any age, sex, background, and skill level to acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for participation in a lifelong fitness walking program. Although designed primarily for an introductory course at the college level, the text can also be used in a variety of other settings. The material is presented in a style that is easy to understand for the beginning fitness walker, but intermediate and advanced levels of knowledge and skill can be achieved when the material is thoroughly mastered. This is not intended to be a total fitness book. The focus of Walking for Fitness is on the components of health-related physical fitness that are of great est concern in our society cardiovascular fitness and body composition. This edition retains all of the special features and qualities of the original book, with the addition of two new chapters ("Nutrition" and "Aging and Ex ercise"), new and updated information, and a section in the appendix for fit ness walking resources. Activities are presented at the back of the text to provide meaningful learn ing experiences. Other special features include a walking test, three walking programs, and guidelines for effective exercise.
