 This book divided into three parts. Part One deals with zakat in the context of contemporary sosio-economic development prospectives which traces the philosophical foundations of modern sciences and its limitations. It discusses the Islamic "world-views"and its concepts of development with special reference to zakat. Part Two deals with the practice of zakat in other regions. It discusses the concept and practice of zakat during the period of Rashidun caliphs followed by their successors. There is a discussion on the development of the science of islamic jurisprudence with reference to the condification of law regarding agricultural zakat. Part Three stresses the practice of zakat in Malaysia. It traces the historical and socio-political background of the practice of zakat, the issue of zakat from the perspective of Malaysia's national development policies with emphasis on rural development and the New Economic policy. Recommendations on changes with regard to the current practice of zakat are being highlighted in helping to alleviate the poverty of the Malaysian peasants especially the paddy farmers.
