Beginning with the foundation of the Melaka Sultanate, which established a set of traditions that effectively shaped Malay political culture, the reader is taken through the various phases of transformation of the society. The latter part of the 18th century marked practically the first important phases of change when the British Melaka and bought the Malay maritime tradition to an end. By the close of the 19th century, further transformation had taken place with the advent of foreign capital and British administration, followed by even more intensive investments from abroad. Although the Malays were left out of the mainstream of development, there was nonetheless active intellectual ferment resulting from the growth of both religious and vernacular schools.
