Summary:Most farmers practice soil renewal with a 5 to 10-year cycle. The reason for such practices is presumably due to diseases. Indeed, build-up of soil-borne pathogens in a continuously cultivated vegetable plot had been documented (Chang and Liao 1989). However, for a soil to become unproductive as a result of excessive accumulation of nutrients is uncommon in areas endowed with heavy rainfall.
