Description
Summary:Environmental issues will be at the forefront of concern of governments as we move towards the 21st century. A proper understanding of mechanisms and relationships will be vital if we are to reconcile the economic and environmental conflicts. Statistics has a major role to play in such areas as quantifying effects, assessing consequences, measuring risks, interpreting the evidence. Already Environmental Statistics is becoming an important, high-profile, specified theme throughout the world. Many organisations are signalling their commitment to this theme; by including within their present research, education and training portfolios a specific place for environmental statistics'; for example, we have universities and colleges establishing departments or centres for 'environmental statistics'. New international coordinated themes are being set up to harness this growing interest and activity through conferences, journals, books and joint research programmes.
