The appeal of waterfalls is ageless. Throughout history, man has been enchanted by their majesty and mystique. From the breathtaking Angel Falls of South America (the world's tallest at 980 metres) to the awesome Niagara Falls, the timeless beauty of the waterfall, the never-ending spectacle of sight and sound, has never failed to stop the traveller in his tracks. In Malaysia, the natural topography favours the formation of waterfalls. The Main Range of Peninsular Malaysia and the Central Bornean Range combine with the terrain's geology and the region's heavy rainfall to provide ideal conditions for the fairly frequent occurrence of waterfalls. Several of these waterfalls are easily accessible and are located in Forest Reserves, Nature Parks and Recreational Grounds. Such spots are extremely popular, especially at weekends when they are crowded with day-trippers, swimmers and picnickers. Other lovely waterfalls, however, require longer journeys to rural villages, Orang Asli settle ments or rubber estates. These are largely unspoilt, with cascades of sparkling water and lush greenery all around to reward the intrepid visitor. Such are some of the waterfalls in this book. Found in forest reserves or primary jungle, they can only be reached on foot through trails of several kilo metres.
