Summary: | Radiation physics was born in 1895 when Roentgen discovered Roentgen rays or later known as X-rays. These rays were found to be able to penetrate photographic film wrapping paper. Its properties are found to be the same as other electromagnetic radiation which propagates in a straight line and is not deflected by electric or magnetic fields. The potential of X-rays was immediately recognized by scientists. Within just three months of its discovery, X-rays were being used in Vienna to aid surgical operations. Imagine the atmosphere of enthusiasm of scientists to welcome his discovery, because in just one year as many as 400 papers on X-rays were produced. X-rays were widely used before their biological radio effects were properly understood. As a result, in the following 40 years, it is reported that at least 110 radiologists have died due to diseases produced by injuries due to excessive exposure to X-rays. This has not taken into account the adverse effects experienced by other users. |
