Description
Summary:This revision of the very successful first edition provides a comprehensive overview for the 1990s of the management of preservation of information in both paper and electronic formats. It takes account of recent research in some of the more traditional areas, but, in wholly new chapters, also gives detailed consideration to the technical and professional issues which arise from the need to preserve electronic data and to create electronic data archives for the future. This new focus reflects the changing concerns of both academics and practitioners with access to information, permanence of electronic data, selection of what to preserve, environmental considerations, and digitization as a preservation tool. The preservation of information in an accessible form is the theme of John Feather's book, and at its core is advice and guidance on how to implement and manage a preservation policy. These issues are put into context by a look at international initiatives and at experiences in Europe, the USA and elsewhere. Library and information managers cannot fail to be concerned with the complexities of storing safely and accessibly the mass of different types of printed and electronic materials on the market. By taking a systematic look at the full range of techniques and options open to them, this practical guide will help them to ensure the future of their collections.
