Summary: | Although the first two editions of this textbook had a slightly different title, this new version of Business English for the 80's can rightfully be considered a fourth edition. Like its predecessors, it was written for the use of today's college undergraduate. To help convince readers (particularly business majors) of the enormous importance of communication skills, 40 high ranking corporation executives have provided thought-provoking quotations one to introduce each chapter of the text. Wilfred O. Uhl, president of the Long Island Lighting Company, prepared the quoted statement that introduces Chapter 1. His words seem to reflect the thinking of America's business leaders and to assign special importance to the study of English grammar by business students. His final sentence reads: "No one reaches an upper management position in a large American organization today without possessing exceptional skill in speaking and writing the English language." Those who fail to acquire that "exceptional skill," it would seem, will be denied the substantial income generally paid to executives in upper management. |
