Description
Summary:As in all aspects of Malaysian life, the scenario facing the electrical establishment in 1945 was totally different to that which had existed prior to the Second World War and the Japanese Occupation, and, as always, the difference was a reflection of the fundamental changes that had taken place in Malaya as a whole. The old assumptions of the pre-war colonial era had been completely swept aside. Just as for the country at large no-one with or without the Malayan Union scheme essayed by the returning British-thought any longer in political terms of the Malay Peninsula except as a single entity. so in the field of electricity supply no-one conceived future expansion except in terms of central planning and uniform development. The psychological change which affected all the inhabitants of the Peninsula likewise was mirrored amongst those Malaysians who formed the ranks of the electrical establishment. Many of them had held responsible posts under the Japanese, and no longer did the feeling prevail that management was destined to remain a British preserve. In short, morally as well as physically, the ruins of the pre- War world lay all around them. The past had been wiped out, and a fresh start had to be made. The great rupture between the pre-war and post-war worlds could not have appeared more absolute.
