 The moment I entered the boardroom, I knew the meeting would be momentous. For years, these execu- tive sessions had followed a carefully orchestrated ritual. Today, there was a subtle, though telling, difference. Ordinarily, the conference table's 21-foot-long surface, polished to look more like glass than the rare burl of Carpathian elm, would be touched only by PepsiCo board members, and then no more than twelve times a year. Today, the fitted leather covering that hid the gleaming top was removed. I had been in this room at least a hundred times. I had sat worried at this table and I had nearly soared at it. I had witnessed tense colleagues - friends - being publicly hung for questions of performance, and I had seen them applauded, just as I had been here, for marketing ideas and strategies.
