Summary: | Urban geography is a growing field of study which has become well established over the past two decades. This text acknowledges the traditional bases of the subject in areas such as urban morphology, central place studies, and urban ecology, but places greater emphasis upon the newer components of study and research, and seeks to analyse and discuss these in greater depth than is perhaps usual in similar introductory books. The authors make a serious attempt to tackle the major concep tual and methodological issues, and to place the study of urban geography on a firm footing. This is paralleled with a demonstration of the continued and increasing prac tical application of geographical research to urban issues. The opening chapter acts as an introduction to the rest of the book and deals fairly briefly with some of the older concepts, theories, and modes of analysis. The remain ing chapters cover inter-urban 'and urban system themes, methodological and historical bases of urban geography, and the city as a territory with a particular focus on the social perspective. |
