 The Malaysian Background BOUNDED by the Indian Ocean on one side and the South China Sea on the other, Malaysia stretches from the Kra Isthmus through the Malay Peninsula to the north-west of Borneo. The country con sists of eleven states and the Federal Territory in Peninsular Malaysia (formerly known as Malaya), and the two Borneo states of Sabah and Sarawak. The total land area of Malaysia is approxi- mately 329 700 sq. km. of which Peninsular Malaysia occupies 131 500 sq. km.
