Summary: | The past decade has witnessed an unprecedented volatility in energy prices which has had profound repercussions on the world economy. While the future course of these prices may prove difficult to predict, there has emerged from this experience a clear need for energy planning as a means of cushioning the impact of possible fluctuations. To accelerate the effort towards a comprehensive approach to energy policy formulation and energy planning, the Division of Natural Resources and Energy of the United Nations Department of Technical Co-operation for Development, in co-operation with the Government of Sweden and the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA), held a Symposium on Energy Planning in Developing Countries at Saltsjobaden near Stockholm, Sweden, on 28 September-2 October 1981. |
