Description
Summary:This is a reprint of a book first published by Oliver & Boyd in their series University Reviews in Botany. The opportunity offered by this reprint has been taken to make minor corrections. Soil is a heterogeneous mixture of most of the chemicals known to man. This, coupled with tremendous diversity in physical conditions, results in soil becoming the home of a greater variety of micro-organisms than any other environment. Although this makes a study of it difficult, knowledge about soil is especially necessary now when, in common with other parts of man's environment, it is in danger of over-exploitation. This book reviews the information available to us on soil micro-organisms and their ecology and introduces the subject to agriculturists, biologists, and earth scientists in general. It contains a new assessment of microflora and stresses the inter-relationships between microbes, plants and organic debris. The authors are both actively engaged in teaching and research in soil microbiology at the University of Liverpool.
