Instead of treating this relationship on a state-to-state basis, it studies the power relationships existing between mainland Southeast Asia and China from the perspective of what is seen as a focal geostrategic region which lies atride the boundaries of China and the states to its south. Although the basis of interpretation is largely spatial, the analysis is to a considerable exent also inter-disciplinary. In doing this, the conceptual tools of poser inebars and romal per dimains are enunciared and applied to gain insights into the power configurations coating in the region. How valid is the current definition of "Southeast Asia" as a region in strategic analysis? Where are the actual limits of Southeast Asia? Can power be measured in terms of territorial size, or conversely what is the linkage between national power and terraerial size? What are the strategic implications of two sacrosanct ideals brought into the region by the Westin powers in the course of their colonial advance namely, terrisorial sovereignty as expressed in immutable boundary lines and the Western-style nation rate? This book seeks to answer these questions, atong others. For example, it also examines the strategic implications of policies designed to contain the influence of the People's Republic of China In the conclusion, attention is drawn to the relevance of the regional strategic environment to a debate, discernible in the early 1980s. on the relative merits of coastal coalition defence and a purely maritime strategy as seen in the context of global superpower rivalries.
