Among most of the countries of this region there is, of course, a general similarity in economy and many economic problems; and in varying degrees all of them have become more and more conscious of standing in the shadow of an increasingly powerful China. But despite important similarities in their traditional cultures and social structures, their colonial and postcolonial histories have produced substantially dissimilar results; and any close scrutiny of the contemporary government and politics of these countries will disclose at least as many significant differences as resemblances.
