 This book is based on a course of lectures on multivariate analysis given by the author annually to postgraduate students and research workers in the behavioural sciences. It is introductory in two senses, firstly to prepare them for further instruction in the use of computer packages for the analysis of multivariate data and, secondly, to assist them in their study of more advanced books on the subject, such as that by Morrison. However, although introductory, the book is not elementary and the student who wishes to benefit from it must first acquire a working knowledge of matrix algebra by a careful reading of Chapter 3. The bulk of the book is concerned with the classic techniques of multivariate analysis, but throughout, special attention in directed to the disruptive role which errors of measurement in observations can play when these techniques are employed, and to possible ways of assessing the effects of such errors. Chapter 11, on analysis of variance, is concerned primarily with univariate analysis but it includes many of the techniques required for multivariate analysis of variance which is discussed briefly in Chapter 12. Both chapters should serve as a helpful introduction to specialist books on this topic, such as those by Bock and Finn. The book ends with a chapter, by B.S. Everitt, on cluster analysis and other exploratory techniques which in recent years have become popular.
