Summary: | This volume of essays represents a selection of papers I have written since 1962. The theme of the essays in the first section is my growing disillusionment with the application of the theories that have emerged from the study of the urbanization process in the West. In 1960 when I left New Zealand for Malaya, the 'underdeveloped world' meant a 'developing world' to me. Perhaps my views were more liberal than others for I anticipated that 'development 'within different political and economic systems in the underdeveloped countries would mean a progression towards the same high per-capita income enjoyed by societies of the developed world. |
