The first is to illustrate the importance of the ecosystem as the core concept in biogeography. The second is to demonstrate the potential integrative role of biogeography within geography. The means to these ends is the theme of human impact on the ecosystem which is central to our thesis; it is hoped that it will be of interest to, and will stimulate thinking among, both geographers and biologists - indeed all those intrepid students who work in the hazardous but exciting border area between the natural and social sciences.
