John David Guillory (born 1952) is an American literary critic whose "distinguished career has transformed the ways in which the discipline of literary studies understands itself." Guillory has focused his scholarship on rhetoric, the sociology of criticism, the history of the humanities, and early media studies, especially the work of Marshall McLuhan, Walter Ong, and I. A. Richards. He has also written extensively on Renaissance figures such as Spenser, Shakespeare, Marlowe, Bacon, Milton, and Hobbes.
